Vigilante justice has no place in medical care

Back in 2016, when Donald Trump was elected President, women across the country felt a chill go down their collective spines. We knew that the election of a misogynistic grifter would spell the end of abortion rights. At the time, we were told we were “histrionic” or “overwrought”, but we knew.

What does State Bill 8 do?

With the complicity of Mitch McConnell, Trump was handed three Supreme Court picks. And with his pledge to the Evangelicals, Trump followed through in appointing justices who he believed would overturn Roe v. Wade. …

In the early 2010s, a wave of news stories described an unthinkable horror to many hundreds of thousands of untested sexual assault kits sitting on shelves while the alleged perpetrators of those assaults walked free. Sexual assault kits had either been destroyed by police departments, ruined by inappropriate storage, or were just languishing on shelves in police evidence rooms.

It was enraging. The hubris of police and prosecutors ignoring the pain of hundreds of thousands of people who had taken the difficult step of having a sexual assault kit collected was hard to digest.

In looking at the independent investigation into Andrew Cuomo, it is clear that this man actually believes that he has done nothing wrong. He is a man who has been in powerful positions for so long and crossed boundaries so often, that he thinks that his offensive behavior is normal. He is used to keeping people off-kilter so that they will do his bidding. It is such a habit, that he does not understand why people are upset with him.

But perhaps I am being too kind. In reading the report, is it clear that the governor regularly looked for…

Over the past few weeks, a number of news stories caught my eye as they illustrate how far we have to go in enforcing laws against sexual assault and harassment.

While the #MeToo movement illuminated just how pervasive sexual harassment and assault are, it only started some difficult conversations and reflections. But a look at recent stories tells me that we have a long, long way to go before we see harassment and assault taken seriously in this country.

It does not matter how strong the laws and tools are if the people who are supposed to enforce them do…
